Abstract
Partendo dalla ‘autobiografia’ recitata dal personaggio del Lar familiaris nell’Aulularia di Plauto, la ricerca ricostruisce il significato e il ruolo culturale di questa divinità per i Romani. Questa conclusione viene raggiunta attraverso un’analisi delle rappresentazioni iconografiche del Lar, del suo modo di vestire, del tipo di rapporti che intrattiene con i membri della familia, dei racconti mitologici di cui è protagonista. Il ritratto che emerge è quello di un dio «semplice» ovvero minutus, nella terminologia latina. Questa attenzione alla terminologia propria dei Romani – il modo in cui specificamente essi «chiamano» questo tipo di divinità – fa corpo con l’approccio metodologico privilegiato in questo studio: ossia la scelta di collocarsi il più possibile «vicino all’esperienza» dei Romani, utilizzando le risorse dell’ermeneutica filologica per accrescere il patrimonio «emico» a disposizione dello studioso.
Taking as a starting point the ‘autobiography’ of the character of the Lar familiaris in the Aulularia of Plautus, this research reconstructs the meaning and the cultural role of this Roman god, by examining the iconographic representations of the Lar, his costumes, the relations that he has with the members of the familia, and the mythological accounts of which he is the protagonist. The portrait that emerges from this analysis is that of a “simple” god or minutus, in the Latin terminology. This attention towards the distinctive terminology of the Romans – the specific way in which they “call” this deity – is part of the methodological approach of this study: the choice to stand as closer as possible “to the Roman experience”, by utilizing the resources of the philological hermeneutics so as to increase the “emic” background available to the scholar.
