Abstract
Il presente contributo comprendente l’integrale carteggio intercorso f ra i due studiosi, ne ragguaglia su molteplici aspetti biografici inediti e a livello più profondo su alcune molle del loro agire. Di sicuro fu una delle amicizie più sentite per entrambi ed è curioso come finora fosse pressoché sconosciuta. Un motivo andrà imputato al diverso stato sociale e culturale dei due: il Villari fu politico, accademico chiarissimo, autore di volumi tradotti all’estero, meridionalista, pubblicista conteso dalla stampa nazionale. Il Pitrè fu medico nel capoluogo siculo, cultore di un filone di studi allora in divenire e soltanto negli ultimi anni di vita ebbe un incarico di docenza universitaria per la nuova disciplina della Demopsicologia.
This contribution transcribes the entire correspondence between Pasquale Villari and Giuseppe Pitrè, and thus informs on many aspects of their biographies that were previously unknown, trying to shed some light on the motives behind their actions. Without a doubt it was a significant friendship for the both of them, and its obscurity until now is difficult to explain. A reason for this must be their very different social and cultural background. Villari was a politician, academic (whose works circulated outside Italy), expert on the problems of the Italian South, and widely-requested publicist. Pitrè, on the other hand, was a doctor in Palermo, and while he was an expert on Sicilian folklore, only later in his life he was assigned a tenure as a professor of the new discipline of Demopsychology.
