Peter Geschiere — Capitalism and Witchcraft. Everyday Convergences in Africa — and Elsewhere

Abstract

The notion of debt is central in the discourse of ‘witchcraft’ that emerges in many parts of Africa, as it is in capitalist mindset. Analysing the convergence of the intimate world of the house with the accumulation of wealth and power, the paper explores how local notions of occult forms of empowerment can quite easily be articulated with new economic opportunities and ‘modern’ capitalist ideas of debt. This specular reading not only calls into question the ‘traditional-versus- modern’ paradigm, it also makes clear how capitalism and witchcraft feed on each other conceptually and historically.
