Abstract
In questo articolo rifletto sull’‘esperienza dell’estraneità’ presso alcune comunità indigene Wichí del Gran Chaco argentino (Provincia di Salta), ubicate lungo la sponda del fiume Pilcomayo. Basandomi sull’etnografia di lungo periodo, la mia analisi si sviluppa a partire dalle memorie native dell’incontro con il gaucho, prototipo storico dell’‘essere altro’, per riflettere sui vincoli tra parola ed esperienza. Le considerazioni e rappresentazioni dello ‘straniero’ e della sua discendenza, i criollos, mostrano la complessa costruzione culturale della differenza e il carattere relazionale dell’identità, evocando l’agency indigena di fronte ai momenti socialmente critici e ai dilemmi culturali.
In this article, I reflect on the ‘experience of strangeness’ among Wichí indigenous communities of the Argentine Gran Chaco (Salta Province), located along the banks of the Pilcomayo River. Based on long-term ethnography, my analysis starts from the native memories of the encounter with the gaucho, who embodies the historical prototype of ‘otherness’, to reflect on the links between words and experience. The collective representations of the ‘foreigner’ and his descendants, the criollos, shows the complex cultural construction of difference and the relational character of identity, evoking indigenous agency to face critical social moments and cultural dilemmas.
